St George Marathon
A cool breeze, mountain air, and your feet pounding the pavement. Avid runners would love that combination. Imagine running a marathon in those conditions. Even if you did feel like you were ready to collapse, you would want to keep going just to see what view is around the next bend. Every October, people gather in the Pine Valley mountains to begin the St. George Marathon. The marathon begins at approximately 5,000 ft. and ends at 2,600 ft. Runner's World magazine rated it as one of the top 10 most scenic marathons. As a sanctioned USA Track & Field race, it regularly meets its registration cap of 6,200 participants. Most of the participants are from Utah (63 percent) followed by California residents (12 percent), but the race also attracts foreign runners from Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Great Britain, Germany, Hong Kong, Iceland, Japan, and Mexico. The race is also fairly well divided between genders, with males comprising 60 percent of participants. With such a diverse crowd, the St. George Marathon creates an air of excitement for the whole community. The marathon is only one of the many reasons people come to St. George.
